Pujol: Los hábitos han cambiado y nuestros ojos es
Spanish director, Mireia Pujol, studied Audiovisual Communication and Film Direction in the New York Film Academy. Since she was a child, she has been a keen observer and her approach to this language came from the need to express things through the eye. I have always felt attracted to look at things that are apparently irrelevant and that others might not appreciate.She began her career in the world of film and fiction. Upon graduating, she directed two short films: Wedding of Heroes and Quédate. She worked closely with important Spanish directors, such as José Luis Cuerda. Afterwards, she began making commercials and directing other fiction formats. She has worked with Audi, Coca Cola, Dewars White Label, Vodafone, Brugal, Once, Mapfre, El Corte Inglés, Sitges Film Festival and many others. In 2014, she directed the documentary Diary of Hunger, for which she received numerous awards. What she enjoys most about her profession is the creative process of conceiving in images the script that is in front of you, and the first few seconds of filmed material. It is a magical moment, fortunately never quite as you expected. Pujols main quest as an artist is the human element. There is a need to explore peoples way of feeling things, to try to understand how they live, with all that it implies. She conceives the camera as an eye that watches and approaches respectfully to reflect upon the existence of the other. Her visual style is marked by this concern, by naturalism and an aesthetic will to approach emotions with certain beauty. Her wish to explore and feel is reflected in each frame she films and in the risks she takes while shooting. The making of the documentary Diary of Hunger was a very difficult experience. Pujol defines it not as a project nor a film, but as an indeleble part of her life.The director finds inspiration in the movies, in music and in the streets. In cinema, I have a special devotion for all the works by the Dardenne brothers, specifically for Rosseta and El hijo. As for music, I studied piano since I was very young. I am particularly inspired by Satie and Mendelssohn. And the moderns, Patti Smith, Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen. On the other hand there´s the Street, that is where life takes place. Undoubtedly it is the most important source of inspiration. If Pujol had the opportunity to meet any director to learn from, it would be very difficult for her to choose, but in her list, the following names stand out: Kubrick, Haneke, Bergman, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, and Lucrecia Martel. They all have a powerful eye, they discover us in the human essence with a unique strength, undoubtedly transformational for the viewer. Among the movies she has been moved by as a professional and a person are: Los 400 golpes, El regreso, Rosseta, El hijo, La ciénaga, Persona, Su hermano, La niña santa, Amor and many others. For the director the future of commercials is changing: with the explosion of the Internet and new technologies, the viewer has an immensely bigger audiovisual background. I think new generations are hungry for new formats, new ways of receiving stories, she explained. Unfortunately, I think the classical TV ad (20 to 30 seconds) has an uncertain future. Habits have changed and our eyes expect more. She is currently writing her first fiction feature film and is working on the development of a possible conceptual documentary on Tata Mala, Enric Montefusco´s next theater play for El Grec. At the same time, she continues to travel and shoot ads.Production Company:Carbo Films, USAContact: {Julia Camara-Calvo;julia@carbofilms.com} T +1-310-823-5400{Watch video;http://www.produ.com/publicidad/videos/index.html?Noti= 9701}
