Pablo Casacuberta, besides being a director, is a Uruguayan artist, writer and moviemaker who has made a feature film and numerous shorts. He was a finalist in a Sundance Institute screenwriting contest, won a Coral for Best Experimental Work at the Havana Film Festival, and had a music video nominated for a Latin Grammy.Casacuberta says that being a director gives him a passport to situations that he would normally never experience. “Being a director means not only creating a parallel universe but also, during the process, living there awhile. The constant change helps to keep your perceptions alert, to walk in somebody else’s shoes and swiftly widen the scope of your experience” the director said.He considers that leaving his personal mark on a production basically reveals who he is as a person: “Leaving my personal mark begins with accepting that what I do will leave its mark on me, making public who I am as a person, what makes me laugh, what moves and excites me.”His audiovisual work has been aired on TV in more than 100 countries, and as of now he has published seven novels and has been awarded the Uruguayan National Literature Prize, and is a three-time winner of Montevideo’s Unpublished Novel Award. There’s more. He also worked as second-unit director for Alfonso Cuaron on “Children of Men,” and for Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu on the memorable Nike commercial “Write the Future.” Casacuberta has also staged numerous painting exhibitions and has composed the music for several stage shows. In recent years he has developed a growing interest in the interface of neuroscience and art, and has given conferences on the subject in Madrid, New York, Bogota, Buenos Aires and Montevideo.Though in the future he would like to film a series with David Attenborough, he has learned that things go better when he keeps his spirit open to the unpredictable. “The succession of unforeseen experiences knocks down the barriers of routine,” he said. In recent years he has filmed in such faraway places as Hong Kong, Taipei, Bangkok, Nairobi, Cape Town, Lisbon and London. The moviemaker predicts growing international relevance for the Hispanic film industry thanks to the courage and originality of its ideas. “Latin movies, which have always been very creative and in recent decades have brought fame to such internationally renowned figures as Gonzalez Iñarritu, Cuaron and Del Toro, are no longer seen by distribution centers as all about local color and picturesque characters” the director said.Casacuberta is currently working with La Fabrica TV production company, which he describes as a group that has deep respect for the relationship between directors and creatives, seeing it as a chance to establish lasting ties and create memorable works in an atmosphere of great respect and freedom.
