After the success of Monzón, Buena Vista Original Productions and Pampa Films join forces once again for a fiction series based on true facts. Buena Vista Original Productions announced the start of a new series that follows the friendship between two young women in the `50s, during the dictatorship of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo in the Dominican Republic.

Mariposas is an exciting epic biography in which the color of the Caribbean is intertwined with crime politics, rigorously depicting the life of a family of Spanish exiles on an island dominated by the regime of the dictator Trujillo, also known as El Chivo. In the story, the young Spanish immigrant Arantxa Garmendia becomes friends with Minerva Mirabal, renowned Dominican political activist, who, together with her sisters, received the nickname of “Las Mariposas”, and became a Latin American myth upon facing Trujillo and contributing to the hasty end of the dictator. The date of the tragic death of Mirabal–November 25, 1960–was established by the UN as the International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women.
With locations in different settings of the Dominican Republic and Spain, the new production will have 13 episodes and will reach the screens of Latin America in the second semester of 2021. The casting of the series will be announced soon.
