Carlota wrapped production after four months of filming across multiple locations in Latin America and Europe
Carlota, a fiction series produced by Sony Pictures Television, has wrapped production after four months of filming across multiple locations in Latin America and Europe, where palaces, convents, gardens, historic streets, and specially adapted sets were used to recreate the visual world of the era. This ambitious production, which portrays the life of the Empress of Belgium, will be available exclusively on HBO Max.
Starring Belinda (Carlota), Jaime Lorente (Maximilian), Miguel Ángel Silvestre (Van Der Smissen), and Mabel Cadena (Josefa), Carlota is inspired by the historical figure of a woman ahead of her time, whose vision of power, ambition, desire, and legacy continues to captivate audiences to this day.
Through a bold, contemporary, and emotionally driven reinterpretation of her story, this original series offers a human perspective on the events that shaped her life while reimagining a Mexico divided by war and competing ideologies.
With humor, audacity, and creative freedom, Carlota explores power, desire, betrayal, and politics from a contemporary perspective, challenging traditional historical narratives and exposing the human cost of empire. To bring this vision to life, the production assembled a distinguished international cast and a world-class creative team behind the scenes.
“Carlota is one of the most important projects of my career. Reaching the end of production fills me with immense gratitude toward our extraordinary cast and everyone who believed in this project from day one. We poured our hearts into every scene and every detail, driven by the conviction of creating a production that honors the magnitude of this story and connects with audiences around the world. I leave with unforgettable memories and deep pride in what we have built together. Now, the greatest reward will be for HBO Max audiences to discover Carlota, be moved by her story, and fall in love with these extraordinary characters,” said Carlos Quintanilla, creator and showrunner of Carlota and VP & Head of Content and Production at Sony Pictures Television.
The series’ visual concept was developed by an acclaimed international creative team led by directors Ana Lorena Pérez Ríos and José Manuel Cravioto, with Carlos Bodelón serving as production designer and Loles García Galeán overseeing costume design. Their work, together with the cinematography, makeup, hairstyling, art, and set construction teams, was instrumental in creating a contemporary and visually ambitious interpretation of Carlota’s world.
“Carlota reflects HBO Max’s commitment to championing stories that resonate with local audiences while being produced on a scale and with a quality capable of connecting with viewers around the world. It offers a fresh and contemporary reinterpretation of an iconic figure through a powerful script, stunning period recreation, and complex characters that will surprise audiences when it premieres on the platform,” said Mariano César, SVP, HBO Max Original Content Latin America.
As part of the announcement, HBO Max unveiled a behind-the-scenes video offering an exclusive look at the creative process behind *Carlota*. Featuring never-before-seen footage, the material showcases the transformation of filming locations, the work of the art, costume, makeup, and production teams, as well as key moments in Belinda’s transformation into Carlota.
With filming now complete, Carlota enters post-production as it moves toward its 2027 premiere on HBO Max.
