Jane Featherstone, executive producer of BBC Studios´ The Split (6×60’) and founder of Sister Pictures, who made the show, highlighted that this content can travel easily because it covers universal topics such as family and relationships. She mentioned that women comprise the entire team behind the drama.
The Split, a Sister Pictures´realization for BBC, co-produced with SundanceTV, had a successful debut in the UK and a peak of 6 million TV viewers and 24.2% share, becoming BBC´s third new dramatic series with the highest rating in 2018 to date. A second season was confirmed for 2019. The series is being distributed in Latin America. It was written by Abi Morgan and stars Nicola Walker.
“It is very important to have women on TV nowadays. For us it was natural since all the people producing the show are women. We presented very strong female characters, showing they can handle family and work, but who are also affected the same as men, by tragedy and divorce. They are different types of women, who are complicated and not perfect, but authentic,” comments Featherstone.
Another important element is that it is a generational show.
She feels that crime and the law are great story motivators and that in the UK, the legal topic has been underrepresented. She highlighted that The Split presents a more glamorous London than other shows that depict the hard part of the city. “The series presents glamorous, well-dressed people. From social networks, we have received very positive feedback,” she said.
