Rico brings a thoughtful and powerful voice to the conversation around why representation in news matters and how the gap between perception and reality is impacting millions of U.S. Latinos.
At Horowitz Research, our mission is to deliver deep insights into how diverse audiences engage with media content and technology. For example, over 6 in 10 (62%) Latinx consumers agree it is important for news organizations to hire journalists who represent the cultural and ethnic people in the communities they cover, according to our recent study FOCUS Latinx Volume 3: Social, Cultural, and Political Shifts.
Why Representation Matters in News
By: Jack Rico
As someone who has worked in both Spanish-language and English-language TV newsrooms, I’ve experienced firsthand how crucial it is to have a variety of perspectives and voices in the media industry. While today’s American newsrooms look more diverse than they did a decade ago, there’s a disconnect happening that most people don’t realize.
Over 6 in 10 Latino consumers (62%) say it’s important for news organizations to hire journalists who reflect the cultural and ethnic communities they report on. Yet only 51% of Latino consumers feel that TV news does a good job of representing them. That 11-point gap speaks to millions of Americans feeling unseen.
These numbers highlight a problem but also an opportunity for news organizations. Diversity is normal in real life and should be reflected as such in the media we consume and that shapes us. It’s the difference between being seen and being erased.
