Peter Stephens of AltContent: “We Translate All Metadata So Users Can Find Music In Spanish”

In an increasingly globalized audiovisual market, access to high-quality soundtracks and agile licensing have become critical pillars for production. Peter Stephens, Project Director at AltContent, explains how the engineering behind the platform is eliminating linguistic and economic barriers to connect the best catalogs from Europe, the U.S., and Australia with producers across the Ibero-American world.

One of the biggest challenges for international libraries is search difficulty for Spanish-speaking users. AltContent has solved this problem through its own tagging system, which translates complex concepts of genres, emotions, and instruments from English into Spanish.

“We receive metadata from labels in the UK, France, the U.S., and Australia with concepts referencing musical styles and emotions in English. Through our platform, we translate all these terms so that a user can type keywords in Spanish and the system will take them directly to the tracks that best represent those concepts,” Stephens explains. For the executive, the key lies in the use of synonyms. “The system ensures that tracks are identified effectively, while also enabling downloads in mp3, WAV, or AIFF formats after a simple registration.”

ABBEY ROAD QUALITY AT COMPETITIVE COSTS

With a catalog that already includes 30,000 main tracks and more than 150,000 versions and mixes, AltContent positions itself as a high-end yet economically efficient alternative. Stephens emphasizes that the company’s vision is to democratize access to production music (stock music) without sacrificing excellence.

“Our prices are very competitive because we aim to develop synchronization in the Ibero-American market. Library music offers the greatest flexibility and cost efficiency,” says Stephens. He also highlights the versatility of the catalog. “It’s very common for one of our tracks to be used for a film trailer or advertising content, since it’s a much faster and more affordable alternative to license than commercial music. We feature collections such as the British Score Music Production, whose orchestral pieces are recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studios.”

Unlike other aggregators, AltContent has chosen not to compete with local Latin music offerings, but rather to complement them with Anglo-Saxon and European sounds that bring an independent and commercial feel. Stephens identifies two clear profiles in their offering. “On one hand, we have market leaders with years of experience, such as the seven collections from the French publisher Musique & Music. On the other, we support smaller labels with an indie vibe, such as Tiny Jackets or Electrophone Music. I personally selected these collections with quality and variety in mind,” Stephens comments. However, he clarifies that the platform is comprehensive. “Although our focus is foreign music, all genres are represented on AltContent; we simply aim to offer a different alternative to what is already circulating in these territories.”
