
In her new role, Fernández leads day-to-day newsroom operations, content strategy and editorial direction for N+ Univision Chicago
TelevisaUnivision announced the appointment of Jessica Fernández as the N+ Univision Chicago News Director, overseeing editorial news operations for the local affiliate. Fernández, journalist and media executive, brings 25 years of service to the Chicagoland Hispanic community and Spanish-language television news to the position.
In her new role, Fernández leads day-to-day newsroom operations, content strategy and editorial direction for N+ Univision Chicago, driving multiplatform coverage that informs and serves the Hispanic community across the greater Chicago area.
“Jessica has been a cornerstone of our Chicago newsroom for 25 years, and her promotion reflects the caliber of leadership we continue to develop within TelevisaUnivision,” said Carlos Díaz de la Fuente, TelevisaUnivision Senior Vice President of Affiliate News.
Fernández joined Univision Chicago in 2000 as a News Writer before advancing to Senior News Producer in 2002. In 2016, she launched the station’s Investigative Unit as a Reporter/Producer and was promoted to Executive Producer in 2019. In 2022, she was named Assistant News Director, overseeing day-to-day operations, content and editorial process, and execution of daily news programming and special projects.
A native of Mexico City, Fernández holds a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from Columbia College Chicago and a master’s degree in Public Administration from DePaul University. Her work has earned more than 12 Emmy Awards, including investigations into asbestos in Chicago Public Schools and two specials examining the influx of polluting industries into minority neighborhoods. She is a Social Justice News Nexus Fellow from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and a 2022 Kneeland Fellow.
Fernández’s appointment reflects the depth of talent within TelevisaUnivision’s newsrooms and the company’s continued investment in strong local leadership. Her 25 years of community-driven journalism position N+ Univision Chicago for continued growth as the station deepens its connection with the Hispanic communities it serves across the Chicagoland area.
