Writer Ariana Godoy: “The Wattpad Reading Community Makes the Creative Process Less Lonely”

Ariana Godoy is the author behind Netflix hits like Through My Window
The Wattpad reading community is a very important part of writer Ariana Godoy’s creative process. “They make it less lonely, because usually when you’re writing a book the traditional way, you’re alone with the characters and the story. It’s very beautiful because you don’t feel alone. The process isn’t so solitary; it’s a bit more communal, and I think that’s a fundamental piece. I really enjoy it a lot,” Godoy told PRODU.
With more than 850 million reads on Wattpad, one million books sold, and successful Netflix adaptations, Godoy is an influential voice in contemporary romance fiction.
Godoy began writing on Wattpad in 2014 and has already published 20 web novels in English and Spanish, along with nine bestselling print editions through Wattpad Webtoon Book Group and Penguin Random House.
Her novel Through My Window became a global phenomenon with 386 million reads and was adapted by Netflix and Webtoon Productions into a film trilogy. Each movie debuted at #1 on Netflix’s global non-English language film charts, and the first installment remains one of the platform’s most-watched titles, with 116 million hours viewed.
FOLLOW MY VOICE
Her upcoming release, Follow My Voice, hit theaters in Spain on Friday, October 12, before debuting on Prime Video Spain.
When asked about the biggest challenge in adapting Follow My Voice, Godoy said: “I think it’s the same as with the book. That pressure of dealing with very intense or vulnerable situations and how to do them justice. Also, when you’re creating, you know that everyone’s experience is very different—everyone processes grief differently. That pressure was present in the book and also in the film adaptation. You have to try to reflect it as genuinely as possible—how to do it in the most general way so people can truly connect with it,” she explained.
She shared that she collaborated on the adaptation of Follow My Voice. “It was really nice because I was in Spain while they were finishing the screenplay. I received the first draft and was able to give my opinion on what I thought needed changes. I met with writers Inés Pintor and Pablo Santidrián, as well as the producers. It was a joint effort,” she said.
Godoy says she hopes the film conveys the same message as the book: “The mind can get sick just like the body.” Mental health was not a clear topic in 2010, when Godoy went through a difficult period and thought she was mentally ill or suffering from an undiscoverable disease. Later, she learned she had panic attacks. “I spent two years looking for a diagnosis. When I started writing Follow My Voice, I wanted to address this for people like me out there, so they could see themselves in my story—that the mind can also get sick like the body. I want people to take away the message that we can go through very hard experiences and deal with them in different ways, like Klara did by studying psychology. Everyone handles their process differently,” she expressed.
YOUNG ADULT ROMANCE GENRE
For Godoy, who specializes in young adult romance, these books are what create readers. “They’re fast reads. I think these books carry the beautiful responsibility of introducing readers to the literary world. Later, they branch out into the genres they prefer, but I feel that, at their core, they’re the gateway to literature—and there’s no bad book to start with. If they become readers, that’s already a victory,” she said.
She advises young writers starting out to “not take it too seriously at first, not put too much pressure on themselves, and let things flow. Write, let it come out. Later, you can take the time to polish it and organize it.”
Godoy’s next project, which excites her greatly, is a story about two Venezuelan immigrants in the U.S. facing many traumas they experienced in Venezuela. “I’d like to start new stories, a bit different from what I’ve done. I’ve started, and I have many new things I’m working on,” she concluded.
